Ysgol Gwenfro | Wrexham

  • Client: Wynne Construction
  • Location: Wrexham
  • Value: £4,500,000

A new build single form primary school constructed as part of the redevelopment of the existing Gwenfro primary school site. The project was constructed in phases with the new build and associated external works completed in Phase 1 and the demolition of the existing primary school facility undertaken in Phase 2. The scheme was procured from RIBA Stage 2 through to RIBA Stage 7 handover in just over 15 months.

The project provided a fully coordinated services strategy and scheme design following BIM Level 2 principles utilising Revit software and allowing a rapid installation of services in order to meet the fast track delivery construction programme.

The services strategy comprised a simple, easy to use operate and maintain strategy with passive design solutions employed.

ESD led the environment analysis and integration within the building. This included daylighting analysis and developing integrated light shelves into the classrooms to maximise the natural daylighting which combined with low energy daylight linking lighting offers real operative energy savings.

This facility with high performance façade and fenestration design together with low air infiltration levels developed through the energy thermal modelling permitted a holistic approach to sustainability delivered from first principles.
