This new 440 pupil free school was delivered for the governing body of the West Didsbury Primary School and the Education Funding Agency (EFA). The scheme was funded by the EFA and complies with the requirements of the EFA output specification for the Mechanical and Electrical (M&E) Building Services systems.
The project was a combination of a newly constructed two storey modular facility (constructed offsite) and the refurbishment of the traditionally constructed 1990s annex. ESD where responsible for the detailed design of the M&E systems and ensuring that the project achieved compliance with the rigorous requirements of the EFA output specification.
A particular challenge involved satisfying the overheating requirements of the EFA output specification versus the ventilation solution for the project. We overcame this through the use of low energy, locally controlled mix mode ventilation systems which provided a user friendly ventilation system for the pupils and staff.
Detailed coordination of the M&E systems was important at the design stage given the offsite nature of the modular construction as all builders work penetrations where created in the factory. We ensured through design review meetings that the M&E design was fully coordinated with the modular designers and the M&E sub contract chain prior to the construction works taking place onsite.
The project was successfully completed and handed over in 2016.
